The Scharer's Little Brewery Story...

In the Early 1970's Geoffrey Scharer, a 4th generation publican, who was licensee of the George IV Inn, Picton visited England for the international Brew Ex-Trade Fair, where he found the inspiration to brew German Style Beers here in Australia.

Against all odds, convinced that he could make high quality, natural beers Scharer set off about perfecting his recipes and methods. In 1981 he received the recognition he deserved in the form of the first (on Premises) brewing License ever awarded in Australia. He then set about setting up the first Pub Brewery. This huge step paved the way for many of the fantastic craft beers now brewed and enjoyed throughout Australia today.

In 1987 Brewery operations commenced at the George IV Inn Picton. This continued for many years with the reputation slowly growing by word of mouth, until in March 2006 David Wright and Luke Davies took over Scharer's Little Brewery. This historic change was earmarked with the launch of a reality TV show inspired by this massive change it was aired on the Lifestyle Channel and was called 'The Pub with One Beer'.

Today things remain largely unchanged with David running the George IV maintaining the historic charm of the pub he was originally attracted too. The pub still draws people hundreds of miles each week to visit.

The brewery now has James Wright (Dave's Brother) and Cameron Byrne at the helm. Determined to spread the word of the fantastic beers still brewed by Scharer's Little Brewery in the traditional methods and techniques invented hundreds of years ago and followed by Scharer. The Brewery currently services bars and restaurants in the Sydney Metropolitan area, The ACT and the Blue Mountains.
